Natural Medications vs Natural Supplements
Discussions about supplements inevitably come up — so here are a few things to consider.
Roughly half of all pharmaceuticals trace their origins to natural sources. A few familiar examples:
1. Aspirin – derived from willow bark salicylates
2. Penicillin – discovered from the Penicillium mold
3. Statins – first isolated from red yeast rice
4. Metformin – developed from compounds in the French lilac (Galega officinalis)
5. Icosapent ethyl (Vascepa) – a highly purified, prescription form of the omega-3 fatty acid
- Each of these began with a naturally occurring molecule.
- Each was refined, standardized, and studied.
- Each of the above also has side effects.
So when we say, “It’s natural, so it must be safe,” it’s worth remembering:
--> Nature is powerful, but not harmless.
--> Nature can give us the starting material.
--> Science provides the purity, dosing, and data to use it.
