Supplements - Do I need one?
There are yet any silver bullets (well, maybe Vitamin D or omega-3 if deficient). NMN/NAD, resveratrol, metformin (for longevity), rapamycin, etc. are all still being investigated. Some, like metformin and resveratrol, may have lost traction while others, like rapamycin, are gaining interest in ‘longevity’ research.
Most importantly, the FDA does not review supplements for safety, quality, or purity (such as heavy metals).
So, if you are interested in supplements, here are some recommendations on how to review supplements (or any medical claim).
1. Higher dosage isn't typically better.
2. Fruit flies / mice studies do not translate to human benefit (<10% success). Look for human studies.
3. Gummy vitamins are typically least effective / most inconsistent dosage.
4. Price doesn't necessarily equal quality.
5. Popular brands can have varying quality and effectiveness.
Look for third-party certifications like NSF or USP on supplements. This helps reduce label inaccuracies (advertised quantity of supplement) and contamination risks (arsenic, mercury, lead).
Alternatively, you can check supplement quality with unaffiliated 3rd parties, like LabDoor.com or ConsumerLabs.com.
